We’ve blogged before about some of the reasons to invest in training for your team—but today, we want to dive into one of those reasons in greater depth: Investing in team training is perhaps the best way to improve employee retention at your office.

Your employees are your most invaluable assets; your team’s cohesion is your secret weapon for success; and employee turnover is costly, inefficient, and bad for morale. This should be a no-brainer, then: You can shore up your most precious assets by investing in ongoing opportunities for enrichment and empowerment!

But why does team training help boost retention so much? Consider:

When you train your employees, you show them that you’re invested in their future.

You don’t invest in an IRA if you believe the world is going to end tomorrow, and you don’t put resources into training your team members if you don’t think those team members are in it for the long haul. By training your team members, what you’re saying to them is that you want them to be loyal to your company, to grow with the company over time—and that you are confident they can do it!

Training helps employees navigate their own career path.

Not all of your employees have their career paths mapped out—but, statistically speaking, at least a third of them probably do. They know where they want to go, and they’ll get there one way or another. By giving them resources and investing in their own growth, you show that you care about that career path and are eager to help them reach their destination.

Training provides autonomy.

Nobody likes to play a game when they have to stop every two minutes to ask about the rules or to request assistance. Likewise, employees do not like working in jobs that leave them feeling powerless. But training is fundamentally empowering—a great way to equip your team members to work independently, creatively, and confidently.

Training is a way to show what you really value.

Finally: If you spend money on something, that proves that you value it, and that you want to protect it. Your team members will pick up on that. If you invest in your team, that shows that you value your team. Your employees have worth to you—so let them know it, and watch how it fosters greater loyalty!
