Description

Learn about the latest issues with substance abuse and the impact on your construction site.Substance abuse is not new within the construction industry. Opioid abuse and legalized marijuana (medicinal or recreational use), however, are increasing dramatically. As a result, construction employers now face additional risks related to employees, other contractors, or subcontractors who may be substance abusers. The problem is primarily one of workplace safety, but extends to employment practices, insurance, and even government contracts. This program will help you identify applicable state law and identify substance abuse (legal or otherwise), identify potential safety issues, identify other risks, and how to take steps to mitigate those risks. You will understand the difference between federal laws that currently outlaw marijuana possession or use and new state laws, and will have a greater understanding of how substance abuse impacts your insurance, your OSHA compliance, and how you may deal with employees who, legally or otherwise, are substance abusers. Finally, when marijuana is legalized in your state, you will know which of your employment and safety policies will need to be reviewed and updated.
