How to Get Hired by a Major Accounting Firm

For accountants, no two career paths are ever quite the same. There are plenty of places you can turn for work, but for many accountants, the dream is to work for a major firm—if not one of the Big 4, then at least a larger CPA firm that plays on roughly the same level.

Getting hired by a major accounting firm comes with its own set of challenges, of course, and you can’t necessarily approach the application and interview process like you would any other accounting job. Let me offer a few suggestions for getting noticed and ultimately getting hired by a big firm, based on some experiences I’ve had with world-class accountants and firm managers.

Tips for Getting Hired by a Big Firm

How to Craft the Perfect Elevator Pitch

The elevator pitch is one of the most valuable marketing assets your company will ever have. Being able to convey what you do—what unique value proposition you offer—in 30 seconds or less is critical, because frankly, 30 seconds is all a lot of people will be willing to give you. Candidly, though, my experience is that many business owners aren’t great at offering a concise pitch. The problem isn’t that they don’t know their business well enough, but that they know it almost too well; they struggle to pare things down to the bare essentials, to put themselves in the mindset of the consumer or the investor, who just wants the bare facts.

So how do you distill your company to its essence? How to you provide yourself with a seamless and succinct pitch to generate interest in the business?

Questions You Should Be Asking Your Website Designer

Whether you’re building your company’s first-ever website or simply giving a face lift to your old one, collaboration with your designer is key. You likely have a vision for how your new site should look, or at least some notion of how the site should reflect your branding. It’s important to make that known, and also to understand your role in the ongoing development and site maintenance processes.

In other words, it’s important to communicate—and that means asking your website designer all the right questions before and during the design stage. Anything that’s important to you is fair game to ask the designer—and by the way, if you feel like the designer isn’t great at answering your questions, you should find a new designer.

Some specific questions to ask include the following:

What’s expected of me at each stage?

Eliminate These Bad Habits from Your Daily Life

Aristotle famously wrote that excellence is a habit; not a one-time thing, but the accumulation of all the daily practices and rituals you form. In other words, excellence is something that you’re always pursuing, even during your down time and your behind-the-scenes moments.

For leaders looking to become more excellent, then, it’s not all about the particulars of your day job; it’s about the little ruts you get into over the course of your day. The wrong sorts of habits can derail your creativity, your productivity, and your stamina—which makes it imperative to identify and eliminate them.

Actually locating those bad habits can be difficult, of course, but I can think of a few fairly common ones that you might identify with.

Using your phone or tablet while you’re in bed.

What Is Amp Content—And How Can You Achieve It?

Every business wants its company to be prominently featured in Google search results, and Google, in turn, wants to provide users with relevant search result listings. For businesses to achieve their goal, it’s really just a matter of helping Google achieve its goal—but how?

The Need for Speed

One point to keep in mind is that search engine users—especially mobile ones—don’t want to wait 15 minutes (or even 15 seconds) for their content to load; for this reason, Google tends to prioritize pages that load speedily. That’s where we come to the concept of AMP, which stands for accelerated mobile pages.

Basically, AMP is a coding language (sort of a simplified version of HTML) that is used to create fast-loading mobile pages; you may see AMP content listed on a Google search results page, typically with little lightning bolt icons off to the side.

How to Grow Your Accounting Firm Through Email Marketing

What’s the difference between a great experience with an accounting firm and a slightly dissatisfying one? The answer, according to most CPA clients, has little to do with the actual accounting work and everything to do with communication. Clients like to feel like they’re getting personal attention from their accountant, even though many accountants simply don’t have the time or inclination to offer it. Poor communication is a key factor in the client retention problems that so many CPA firms face—but are there ways to combat it?

Sure there are. Start with email marketing, which is an all-around great tool for ensuring that you keep in touch with your clients—and that they, in turn, feel like they are receiving your attention. Simply producing a monthly newsletter and emailing it to the clients on your email list can go a long way toward keeping them in the fold—and perhaps even toward prompting them to refer your firm to their friends and families.

How to Build a Content Culture at Your Business

As a business owner, you probably understand the importance of producing content. You’ve certainly read all the articles about content marketing and its impact on the consumer, and you know that, in order to succeed in today’s world, your business has to develop its own branded blog posts, tweets, videos, Instagram stories, Facebook updates, and the like.

You may know that content is critical for reaching out to consumers and leading them through the sales funnel—but do your team members know it?

See, here’s the thing about content: If you try to sustain it all on your own, you’re going to be overwhelmed—and the content may turn out to be one-sided, too. But if you can involve your team, not only will that better distribute the content burden, but it will also help to engage them in the vision of the company.

How Young Lawyers Can Impress Judges

If you’re a young attorney who’s facing this prospect right now, the first thing I want you to know is that you’re not alone in feeling nervous. It’s only natural to want to make a strong first impression, and many of the attorneys I’ve met in my career have confessed to similar jitters.

How to Bring Meditation to Your Workplace

Meditation gets a bad rap sometimes. For many of us—especially those of us who are more goal-oriented and practically-minded—meditation has the connotation of something a little soft, a little nebulous, a little frivolous. You may not have anything against it per se, yet you may also struggle to see what kind of real-world benefits it can offer.

You’re not alone. Meditation has long been met with skepticism—yet that’s starting to change. Not only are people accepting the practical application of meditation, but they’re actually bringing it into the workplace with them. And maybe you should too.

The Benefits of Meditation

The benefits? Try improved health. Try enhanced mental clarity. Try increased productivity. Engaging in meditative practice is anything but a time-waster; it can actually help you to use the time you have much more effectively and creatively.

Apps and SEO: The Next Mobile Frontier?

It’s no exaggeration to say that apps are critical to Internet use. Consider this: The average American now accesses the Web primarily through mobile devices, not desktop or laptop computers. Apps provide the most seamless possible mobile experience, streamlining content in a way that mobile browsers can’t compete with.

Still, it may surprise you to learn just how integral apps have become to the online experience. How integral? Integral enough that Google is now listing apps as their own stand-alone entries in mobile search queries. For example, if you get out your mobile device and do a Google search for Snapchat right now, you’ll probably get a list of search results that includes a direct link to the App Store, where you can download Snapchat straight away.

Marketing to Generation Z

Get ready to feel old. Just as some of us are starting to wrap our brains around the so-called millennial generation—who they are, what they bring to the table, how to engage with them effectively—it’s already time to start considering the next generation, Generation Z. We’re talking about the folks born between 1998 and 2008—folks who now make up 22 percent of the entire U.S. population.

And sure, right now, Generation Z people are a bit too young to be regarded seriously as a consumer demographic—but that’s all going to change in just a few short years. It’s changing even now, actually, and marketers have to be ready to engage with this demographic.

Understanding Generation Z

So how do you do that? What do you really need to know about Generation Z?

How Entrepreneurs Can Avoid Burnout

There’s nothing wrong with being busy, but when you’re constantly moving forward with full speed ahead—running yourself ragged, not letting your batteries have much of a chance to recharge—that can lead to problems. The main problem it can lead to is burnout, which has been a scourge to entrepreneurs and business owners forever.

As a leadership speaker and coach, I meet with many business owners who express to me their struggle with burnout; they want to be productive and they want to keep loving their businesses unabashedly, yet they’re not sure of how best to keep their physical, mental, and emotional needs met. How can we stay productive while minimizing burnout, they ask me?

What to Do About Burnout

I’ll tell you what I tell all of them: You don’t choose between productivity and your personal health; emphasizing your personal health is the only way to remain productive over the long haul.
